Second Left is a band
whose original music is a rich melange of textures,
tastes, and flavors. What makes Second Left
unique is the blend of various styles of music
- a little rock, a touch of country, a bit of
jazz, a dash of gospel, a smidgen of soul and
some blues combined with funk rhythms - with
a hook to them.
Each member of the band adds
a different spice to the mix. According to Mike
Galesi, Second Lefts co-founder and lead
guitarist, its not important to label
the groups musical style. For him, its
all about the chemistry of the players and the
arsenal of original material. Along with guitar,
bass, keyboards, and drums, Second Lefts
distinctive sound also includes a vast array
of percussion instruments.
The good humor and gentle wit
embodied in the lyrics is shown by the "how
we got our name" story. Mike and Scott
Monetti (Second Lefts other co-founder,
and the bands lead vocalist and keyboard
player) struggled for months to come up with
a name. Out of sheer frustration, Joe Lange,
Vice President of the band's record label Silica
Music, told them that they had "a second
left" to make a decision on the bands
name. Thus "Second Left".
The eleven tunes on Second
Lefts debut CD, "Fruitful Abyss"
are primarily written individually or together
by Mike Galesi and Scott Monetti with Jon Lange
contributing on three tunes. Galesi and Monetti
are veteran musicians. Galesi has put in time
with a number of successful bands in the New
York Metro area and Colorado and has opened
for acts such as the New Riders Of The Purple
Sage, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, and Pure Prairie
League, while Monetti has made his mark with
groups such as The Alice Project, and The Fins,
and has opened for B.B. King and Melissa Etheridge.
The bands music came
together organically. Ideas were developed out
what they do best - play and jam. When Jon Lange
joined the band and added a creative bass line
to a tune, Galesi and Monetti jumped right on
top of it resulting in a couple of the songs
on the album. Scott "Sparky" Miller
on drums and Brian "Wooker" Navarros
colorful percussions add the final touch. "Musically,
this band is exactly what Ive been looking
for forever - great guys, excellent musicians,
the opportunity to write and play whatever we
want and have a blast doing it. Fun is a very
big part of what we do, and the audience really
picks up on that," proclaims Galesi.
The songs appearing on "Fruitful
Abyss" give a cross section of what is
representative of the band. There are commercial
sounding, radio friendly tunes, but at the same
time the album offers some "quirkier"
tunes, different time signatures, instrumentals,
and some jamming. "The band is more than
just commercial sounding pop songs. We jam,
were instrumental - this is a cross section
of who we are," said Galesi, "and
this is what we wanted on the album."
The first single off the album,
Happy Jam, has received national
airplay (1000 + spins a weeks) on the Friday
Morning Quarterback level, reaching number 25
on the top 200. Follow-up singles will also
be promoted to AAA radio nationwide.
Second Left is primarily a
live band with a lot of energy and interaction.
There is a natural connection to their audience.
The band members are having a great time. The
crowd is drawn into the grooves and hooks, and
people start dancing, having a greater time.
The band has played at numerous clubs and festivals
in the New York City area and are now booking
shows throughout the Northeast.
Fun... Energetic... Enjoyable...
adjectives which all describe Second Left!
